One of the most important lessons from the recent global financial and economic crisis is that the understanding of macro financial links is critical to macroeconomic and monetary policy management. Thus, monetary policy analysts need to understand the role and functions of financial markets and be equipped with techniques and tools for financial market analysis to study the characteristics of financial instruments and pricing.

Objectives: At the end of the Workshop, participants will be able to: (i) examine the role and functions of financial markets and issues related to development of such markets; (ii) explain techniques of financial analysis that are part of the toolkit of policy makers; (iii) apply financial analysis tools to analyse portfolio assets and issues related to the financing decisions of firms to recommend better policy choices; and (iv) extract information about market conditions and vulnerabilities from financial market data.

Resource Persons: The faculty of resource persons will be drawn from advanced central banks, SEACEN member banks, international financial institutions, and The SEACEN Centre.

Target Group: Staff of central banks, monetary authorities and regulatory agencies who are involved in analysing and recommending monetary or financial policies, and developing or regulating financial institutions. Participants are expected to have an advanced degree in economics or equivalent work experience, some familiarity with basic techniques in statistics and probability, as well as the use of spreadsheet.
