The GPSS is a comprehensive initiative by the World Bank, collecting detailed information on payment systems from national and regional central banks and monetary authorities. With responses from 107 central banks/financial supervisory authorities representing 128 economies, it assesses various aspects including infrastructure, regulations, innovations, international remittances,
and oversight frameworks using quantitative and qualitative measures. This data shapes policy discussions globally and nationally and supports technical assistance by the World Bank Group.
Since its inception in April 2007, the GPSS has evolved to cover emerging trends such as fintech, mobile money operators, cybersecurity, and central bank digital currencies.
