Descriptions

The US tariffs against the world and the tit-for-tat between the largest two economies have significant implications for the world economy. While tariffs aim at reducing US trade deficit, the net effect of tariffs on trade deficit is not clear. Will they then bring manufacturing back to the United States? While tariffs may incentivize domestic production of some sectors, they will hurt others. The effects of tariffs on inflation and monetary policy are even more complex, as the channel may be through uncertainties and their impact on economic confidence rather than one off price hike. Professor Wei will provide clarity, understanding, and insights into these questions.
