SEACEN Centre Collaborative Research Project 1 for 2025 on U.S. Dollar Dominance Headed by Prof. Hiro Ito

The SEACEN Centre is undertaking a collaborative research project on “U.S. Dollar Dominance in Trade Invoicing and Cross-Border Investments in SEACEN Economies”. The research project will examine the causes and consequences of U.S. dollar dominance in the region, with the aim of distilling policy insights and considerations. The collaborative research project is headed by Professor Hiro Ito of the Portland State University. Prof. Ito’s areas of focus include financial liberalization and development, capital flows, emerging market open macro policies, and global imbalances.
 


 

Fifteen researchers from eight SEACEN member central banks and monetary authorities have joined the research project as team members. The participating researchers come from the National Bank of Cambodia, Bank of Korea, Bank Negara Malaysia, Bank of Mongolia, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Central Bank of Chinese Taipei, Bank of Thailand, and the State Bank of Vietnam.
 

The inception workshop was held virtually on 22 May 2025 which was attended by Prof. Ito, SEACEN Executive Director Cynyoung Park, SEACEN faculty staff and contributing researchers from SEACEN member central banks.

An interim in-person workshop is scheduled on 25-26 August 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
