The SEACEN Centre held an interim workshop for its collaborative research project titled “U.S. Dollar Dominance in Trade Invoicing and Cross-Border Investments in SEACEN Economies” on 25–26 August 2025 at the Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Researchers from six SEACEN member central banks attended the workshop in person: the National Bank of Cambodia, Bank of Korea, Bank Negara Malaysia, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Central Bank of Chinese Taipei, and Bank of Thailand. Representatives from the Bank of Mongolia and the State Bank of Vietnam participated virtually. During the workshop, researchers presented their preliminary findings to SEACEN’s Visiting Research Economist, Professor Hiro Ito of Portland State University, who serves as the project lead, as well as to SEACEN Executive Director Dr. Cynyoung Park, Dr. Ole Rummel, Director of the Macroeconomics and Monetary Policy Management Division, and Senior Economists.
The interim workshop provided a valuable platform for researchers from participating central banks, SEACEN management and staff, and the Visiting Research Economist to exchange views and discuss the underlying causes and implications of U.S. dollar dominance in trade invoicing and cross-border investments within their respective economies. The discussions also covered relevant policy initiatives, including the local currency settlement framework.
Following the interim workshop, participating researchers will finalise their individual chapters, while the Visiting Research Economist will prepare the integrative chapter. The complete study will be published as an e-book in the end of 2025 or early 2026.
