Regional Trade Network and Local Currency Use

Description

Join us for this upcoming webinar on 16 November 2026, 2.30 PM MYT. The webinar will discuss a study that explores how regional trade-network structure shapes invoicing currency choice in ASEAN+3. It distinguishes the positions of countries in the global trade network from their positions within the region and examine whether regional connections have distinct currency implications. The results show that, for exports, stronger ASEAN+3 connectedness conditional on global connectedness is associated with greater home-currency invoicing and lower USD use. On the other hand, a counterfactual increase in intra-regional trade produces heterogenous currency invoicing choices by countries. The findings highlight that the choice of invoicing currencies depends on how intra-regional trade reshapes the position of countries within a wider global network.
