Juyeol Lee is the 25th Governor of the Bank of Korea and the Chairman of its Monetary Policy Committee. He took office on April 1, 2014, for a full term to end after four years.
Born in July 1952, Governor Lee received a B.A. in Business Management from Yonsei University in 1977 and an M.A. in economics from the Pennsylvania State University in 1988. He completed his mandatory military service (in 1975) after 36 months in the Air Force.
Prior to his appointment as governor of the central bank, Governor Lee served as an Advisor at the Hana Institute of Finance (2012-2014) and taught students in the Graduate School of Economics, Yonsei University (2013-2014).
Governor Lee has also worked 35 years for the Bank of Korea (1977-2012), holding various positions. From April 2009 to April 2012 he served as Senior Deputy Governor, and before that as Deputy Governor (2007-2009) supervising the Monetary Policy Department, the Financial Markets Department and the Press Office. Among Governor Lee’s many other posts, he served as Director General of the Monetary Policy Department (2005-2007), Director General of the Research Department (2003-2005) and Senior Economist of the New York Representative Office (1999-2002).
Governor Lee is married to Young Ja Kyung, and they have a son and a daughter. His hobby is playing tennis with friends and acquaintances.
